Hello... My name is Kristina,
I am a thirty three year old Social Worker who enjoys learning more about life and the people who surround me. Currently, I am digging into the deaf culture. I am interested in doing a blog on learning from the Deaf community and the cochlear implant controversy. As a hearing person I am intrigued to learn as much as I can for my future, as I continue to study American Sign Language. At this point I am an outsider in the Deaf community, but as a person learns and builds a bond with the community they will soon be accepted. Some may believe I should not try to enter into the Deaf community, but I disagree and believe that two worlds should become one.

I think this is something great to learn about. I cant wait to read more. I would have never thought of reading any articles on this. Reading this makes me want to learn more about the implant and how they cope from being deaf to hearing. That has to be a strange, scary and exciting experience all in one.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was in high school and joining the American Sign Language Club. I think it's unfortunate that most places don't accept sign language as a legitimate language. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just how I fell. Anyway, I think it's great that you are taking an interest that matters so much. I agree when you said: "A person should not be cast out of the deaf community because they received a cochlear implant...WHY NOT EMBRACE BOTH WORLDS!" See, I'm all for equality, that's discriminatory towards their own community. I see where you are coming from. Keep up with the posts and good luck to you! :]
